Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena kinta'nija'peres; April 16, 1971 until March 31, 1995) was known by her mononym, Selena was an American Tejano singer. Selena was known as the "Queen Tejano music", her contributions to music and fashion have made her one of the most well-known entertainers from Mexico of all time. Billboard magazine placed her at third place in 2020 on their "Greatest Latino Artists List of All Time", which was inspired by Latin music as well as Latin albums. Because of her clothing choices, media outlets called her the Tejano Madonna. She also is among the most popular Latin musicians of all time , and has been credited with bringing the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest of the Quintanilla family, she made her debut in the music industry as a member of the band Selena y Los Dinos, which also included her elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla Quintanilla. In the 1980s, she was frequently criticised and refused bookings at venues across Texas because she performed Tejano music, a genre of music that is dominated by males. Her popularity grew when she received the Tejano Music Award as Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987. She was awarded the award nine times. The singer signed with EMI Latin in 1989. The self-titled debut album released in the year following. Her brother was her primary music producer as well as writer. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) hit the top of the charts at one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums Chart for eight consecutive months. Its commercial success earned music critics the right to call it the "breakthrough" record of her career. One of its singles, "Como la Flor", became one of her most popular tracks. Live! Live! Amor Prohibido became one the most sought-after Latin albums in the United States in 1994. It was widely praised as being the catalyst for Tejano music's first period of commercialization because it became one the most loved Latin music subgenres at the time.
